Join the debate: Should Film be shot at 60FPS?

I thought you guys should begin to discuss this, if you haven't already. Film speeds are currently at 24 FPS. This is the physical speed in which film is able to move through a camera and be able to portray actual, real time movement. Any faster would slow motion down, any slower would speed motion up. Now with digital cinema, we are able to playback (and shoot) movement as fast or slow as we would like with only a software upgrade. Two articles have been published on First Showing regarding this issue. Directors (Mainly Jim Cameron) are hailing the process as the greatest technological upgrade to cinema since color film. I would have to agree, but this raises other issues, from a post perspective. If you are working at a higher frame rate, does that effect the cost of post production? Do more frames equal more pay? Will this higher frame rate increase the quality of film, thus increasing your work load? Read and discuss. Cheers, - Eve.

I just finished talking to Jeff Otto a few moments ago, and he informed me that Advanced Broadcast Graphics (not Intermediate Broadcast Graphics) will be offered Thursday from 6-10p.

There is also a Special Topics class that will be a 3rd Maya class, and it will be on Thursday from 6-10p.

I am going to assume that one of these classes will moved.

I, and other designers and illustrators that are doing fairly well in the field are asked this question constantly. Each time, I wish I had a precise and perfect answer to give to the sender, but I don’t—not because I forget what it’s like to struggle for work, but because what works for one person does not necessarily work for all people. If you are a student or someone starting out in the field, here’s a bit of advice I can give you for how to get work and promote yourself.

The Price Of Prestige In The VFX Industry

The visual effects business is one of the most bizarre professional industries to work in because some of the most prestigious and successful companies in our industry are the ones that pay the lowest.

In my last article I wrote about vfx salaries at many facilities and how I found it a bit odd that companies like Pixar Animation paid salaries sometimes 20-30% lower than other facilities.

I also wrote about how many new artists in the industry work unpaid internships and some are even willing to pay to work and get some experience. Some vfx facilities prey on that notion while others prey on the notion that they are the most prestigious place to work and therefore you should take a pay cut for the honor.

I call this the price of prestige.

As most of you have probably heard, I am not returning to AIPH. It was a very difficult decision to make, but in the end it came down to me wanting to teach less and "do" more. I've been getting really great opportunities here, and my part time teaching schedule allows me to pursue those.

I miss all of you terribly! After so many classes together, I really consider all of you friends. I'm sad that I never got a chance to properly say goodbye, so I'd like to invite you all to come meet me at Oscars next Friday (sept. 3rd) from 6-9ish. It would be lovely to see you all. For those of you under 21, I'll be happy to hang out outside with you :-)

Avatar vs Hurt Locker, the battle continues. . .

I have a love / hate relationship with James Cameron. This quote is on the top of my hate list. Currently, 95% of live action features that are presented in 3D are produced in post. If most of you are as critical as you should be, you would know that the 2d - 3d conversion process is full of technical issues that lead to an uncomfortable viewing experience. The success of Avatar was contingent on both live action and animated elements being shot with stereoscopic cameras. In other words, 3D was part of the production and the post, not solely a post process.
For those of you out of the loop, Avatar and Hurt Locker were up for best picture last year. Hurt Locker won based on story, character development, and good acting. While Avatar was a technical masterpiece, it was deficient in the story elements that make up a good film. So, do you think Hurt Locker would have been a more successful 3D film or can a film be successful on story and characters alone?
PS: To clarify, success is defined as critically important, not financially
PPS: Pay attention to the NY Times reviews. Notice what the reviewer is reviewing when giving praise and criticism.

Walking Dead : Zombie Makeup

Walking Dead is a TV series that AMC is adapting from the popular comic series by Robert Kirtzman. If you are not familiar, go out and get the compendium from Borders down the street. It's a fantastic read. Who doesn't like zombies, I ask you? AMC has been doing little behind the scene vignettes to wet nerdy fan boys (and girls) appetites. This is a breakdown of the prosthetic team applying zombie makeup. Notice how the actresses' midsection is blue. Can we say color key, anyone? - Eve.
- PS: The company that worked on it KNB is listed in the AIPH VFX Links. If you are into makeup, take the classes in IT and read up on this company.

Pre-Vis Documentary!

Pre Vis is an industry that tends to get a bad wrap because of the unrendered graphics and poor quality. However, this technique is becoming increasingly important as budgets get tighter and set time becomes more expensive. Check out this documentry assembled by the Pre-Vis society. Note that I have put a link to the Pre Vis society under the VFX Links. If you are interested in this field, I would strongly suggest that you get a log in for this site. They have great resourses on the history of pre vis. Enjoy!!

NYC TRIP TOMORROW! (5/19)

So this is the deal:

So good news and bad news. We meet in front of the Annex at 6:30 sharp for a 7:30 bus from 30th Street. Bring money for the subway. Unfortunately John could not get us into any studios at the moment, they are all busy. So we are gonna go anyway, and he is compiling us a list of "alternate interests." Im sorry we can't get into anywhere, but lets try to make the best of it anyway.

We are returning to Philly on the 8:40 bus from NYC.

UPDATES FOR THE NYC TRIP AND IRON MAN 2!

So this quarter we are going to have 2 events coming up, a trip to see Iron Man 2, and a trip to NYC. The Iron Man Trip is going to be May 7th. We are going to bring 12 people. We will probably go to The Bridge per usual. I do not know the time yet. If you want to go, you know the drill, email me your name and ID number at mrobncc@gmail.com.

The second event is the NYC club trip. We are going to try and take 15 people. The trip will be Wednesday, May 19th. We are going to try to visit The Mill, Psyop/ Mass Market, and Curious Pictures. John is contacting those companies at this time. I will let you all know when I have any updates there.

Sorry the blog has been kinda, offline, for the past month or two. I just haven't had a chance to get on here, and getting club lined up this quarter has been kind of hectic. So anyway, how bout a movie trip? Max and I figured we could go see Wolfman, seeing as how the original is a classic special effects film. Either way, the consensus is that this film WILL win best VFX this year. Let alone, the past 10-15 years. I feel that going into this film with low expectations will leave you with a bit of glee in your step. I'm going to see it for the craft of the film, not exactly the story. AVATAR MOVIE TRIP!

Well, with the end of the quarter fast approaching, I figure we should sneak in a movie trip before well all break for Christmas. Eve and I budgeted to go see James Cameron's Avatar at a midnight showing on the night of December 17th, a Thursday, just before we all went home Friday. I have checked all the theaters around, and while I would have loved to do an IMAX showing, all I could find was it playing, in 3D, at the Bridge, at 12:01 on Thursday night (or Friday Morn, whatever you prefer).

I would like to keep the trip to about ten people for logistical reasons, and the fact that these midnight shows are always pretty packed. Email me @ Mrobncc@gmail.com if you wish to attend. I will have further updates later this week.

11/20 VFX CLUB TRIP-Bus Update

These are the times for the busses we are taking too and from New York:

Inbound

7:30 AM Megabus from 30th St. Station. Arrives in NYC, 7th Ave. & 28th St., @ 9:30 AM.

Outbound

8:40 PM Megabus from New York Penn Station (31st St. & 8th Ave.). Arrives back @ Philadelphia 30th St Station @ 10:40.

For those paying themselves, reserve your bus tickets quickly.

In NYC we will be covering the NYC Trans passes ourselves, sorry. This goes for everyone, including those taking the busses with the school.

Meet in front of the Annex Building Monday morning @ 6:30 Sharp. We need to get to the station at least 15 mins early, since even though we have tickets, seating in not assigned.

NEW YORK TRIP UPDATE!!

I gave all of our information to the proper authorities for the trip. If you are one of the ten signed up for the trip, you are in. To finalize everything, after 12:30 PM today (Weds 11/18), you must go to the Student Affairs office on the third floor in the main building, to sign some sort of release form. It is to your left when you get off the elevators.

I hope to have an update on which buses we will be taking either today or tomorrow. There is a Mega Bus that leaves 30th Street Station at 7:30 AM, so I am gonna try to shoot for that. I hope to grab the return bus between 9-10 PM from NYC. I will get you guys a final confirmation soon.

VFX Club trip to New York!

Hey guys, so in case you haven't heard, we will be going to New York to visit some studios this month. The trip is scheduled right now for Monday November 23rd, which is Week 8. John is currently getting in contact with some studios for us to visit. The studios we will be visiting, as of this moment, are 1st Avenue Machine and Curious Pictures. The school will be paying for 10 people to go. If you want in, email me (maxswi86@gmail.com) and I'll add you to the list. Club members will get preference, then it's on a first come first serve basis.

The Visual Effects Society (VES) is seeking student submissions for their annual awards ceremony.

This article is for the unrelentless fanboys (and girls) of James Cameron. While, I am still admittedly a fan of his timeless previous works (Aliens, Terminator), my skeptical side is rising with overwhelming hype. I know you guys have voiced your concerns regarding my rant on the trailer. I guess we'll have to see the 3D version on Dec. 18th to make a true judgement call.
